With Cheltenham getting underway this week, there will be plenty interest in this great racing festival around the country but no where more so than in Castlelyons.
With Coleman Sweeney riding Salsify in the Fox hunters Chase, there is history in the making . . . no jockey has ever won this race three times and this week Coleman is going for the treble!! Colemans mother Joan is the owner and his dad Rodger is the trainer, so the local interest will be huge! We wish Coleman his wife Niamh and all the Sweeeny family the very best on Friday, this race starts at 4pm – don’t miss it!
Then there’s James Fenton who will participate in the St Patrick’s Derby at The Festival, in aid of Cancer Research UK. The Flat race, over one mile and five furlongs, takes place on Thursday, March 14th, run as the seventh race of the day. James is riding Rosies Lady and we wish himself, Joanne and all the Fenton family the very best in this great race for a great cause.

The role of the Parish Website and our Facebook page has become invaluable to all our community both here in Castlelyons and further afield. It keeps us all informed and it also acts as an advertising tool in these difficult times for various local businesses. This service is provided by the website sub-committee of Castlelyons Community Council on a voluntary basis with the only costs being an annual fee for administration and hosting and the cost of printing the fortnightly newsletter. This comes to around €1200 per year. We are indebted to East Cork Oil for their ongoing sponsorship which helps to defray these costs and we urge you to get a quotation from them when purchasing your kerosene or diesel.
Pictured is Con Ryan of East Cork Oil handing over a sponsorship cheque to Sinéad Hickey of the website committee.
