Hello - just recently learned from my GGGrandmother Mary O'Brien Fitzgibbons marriage record that she was from Castlelyons. Mary was born ~1835 to James & Johannah O'Brien, and married William Fitzgibbons in 1862 in NY. Siblings I know of are Edmund/Edward (b. ~1819, m. Mary Mangin), John (b. ~1820), and Catherine (b. ~1832, m. John Lynch). Edward, John & Mary lived the rest of their lives in Orange County, NY. I would be thrilled to hear from anyone with knowledge of or connections to this family.

My 2nd great grandfather, Michael Cotter, was baptised in Castlelyons in 1812, his parents were listed as James Cotter and Abigail Hickie. He came to Australia as an 18 year old in 1830, and I don't have any information about his family in Ireland. Would there be any Cotter / Hickie people in or near Castlelyons who may have a connection to James Cotter or Abigail Hickie?

Is it possible to obtain a copy of Tithe na Smaointe' (The House of Memories)? I understand my family was from Castlelyons and wondered if possibly any of their information may be in the book. I have been told Timothy Flynn son of Daniel Flynn was born there around 1819.

Hi! I hope you are well! I am enquiring about an Uilleann piper from Castlelyons 1830’s/1840’s by the name of “Nance the Piper”. Her name is mentioned in O’Neill’s publication and I am wondering if you have ever come across any information on her? I would be so grateful if you could let me know. Kindest regards, Louise

Hello - My name is Christopher Gleason. I have traced my roots back to Sulgrave, England in the late 1400's. My family is of the belief that the Gleason's originally came from the Castlelyons Parrish in Cork. I am trying to connect any Gleason's from Ireland to England who I could be related to that eventually made it to the United States. I found a James Gleason in the 1901 census that lived in Killsaintann's North. Could there have been Gleason's that left Ireland and went to England in the 1300's or 1400's? This is hard because my lineage breaks off at around 1460 in England. Any help or a start would be appreciated. My nephew is thinking about buying Castlelyon castle with the close by business and surrounding land. Is anyone aware that the Gleason's originated under Lord Barrymore and the Castlelyon Castle?
Thank you again if anyone can come forward with any help.
Best Regards, Christopher Gleason

My 2x great grandmother was Margaret Agnes Coughlan, born 24 Jan 1845 in Castlelyons, Cork. I believe her parents were John Coughlan and Ann Roche (their names were spelled Caughn and Roche on the 7 Jul 1833 marriage record I found on RootsIreland). Margaret appears to have come to the USA, possibly New York, around 1851, possibly traveling with her mother. Margaret, her mother, and her sisters Jane, Eliza, and Mary, lived for several years in New Bedford, Massachusetts before moving to California. A sister to Margaret named Bridget was baptized in Jan 1836, but is not shown in the US Censuses, and I suspect she married and stayed in Ireland, or died in Ireland. I would like to find out if that is true, and what happened to her.
John Coughlan is never mentioned in any US Censuses, so I assume he died in Ireland before 1851. I would like to find out what happened to John, and anything about his life story or ancestry.
I have found a baptismal record for an Ann Roche for 24 Jul 1814 in Castlelyons, with parents named John Roche and Elizabeth Guiry. I would like to know about their families, and to find out if they are my 4x great grandparents.
I would love to find Coughlan or Roche relatives still living in Cork, as well.
I live in California am in Cork this week. I would truly appreciate any assistance in finding info about my family's heritage, or places I can go while in Cork to do more research.

My ancestors were baptized at Castlelyons Parish. James Londrigan and Mary Doyle had Ellen Londrigan baptized 4/6/1820. The sponsors were Michael Croly and Catherine Cronin. Mary Londrigan was baptized 25/3/1822. The sponsors were Patrick Mullins and Ellen Crowley. Of course the name Londrigan or Lundrigan, etc. has changed to Lannigan with many variations. I would love to hear from anyone related to any of these individuals. Thank you so much for this wonderful site. Dave Lannigan, Lake Havasu, Arizona, email lannigan5@sbcglobal.net

Liam Coughlan Liam Coughlan from Dublin, Ireland wrote on March 11, 2017 at 4:59 pm
My name is Liam Coughlan and I would love to know more about any my Coughlan ancestors from Castlelyons and Bridesbridge.

In particular, my Great Great Grandfather was Michael Coghlan, who was Baptised on 3rd October 1820 in Castlelyons Church. Michael married Honora Keeffe from Ballynoe / Conna on 29th January 1846 in Conna Church. They lived in Bridesbridge and had 13 children of whom 8 survived. One of the survivors was Thomas Coughlan, who moved to died on 18th December 1901 and who is buried in the old cemetery in Castlelyons.

I believe Michael Coghlan's parents were Daniel Coghlan and Johanna Leahy. His siblings were John (Baptised on 15th Oct 1810), Daniel (Baptised on 2nd March 1814, Elizabeth (Baptised on 9th June 1816), Mary (Baptised 27th July 1818), Timothy (Baptised 11th March 1823) and Patrick (Baptised 15th November 1825).

Any info on Michael's parents or siblings or their descendants would be great.

Many thanks,
Liam

Hi Kevin,

I have been reseaching my own Coughlan ancestry since last year and have noted that a Maurice Cocklin (a version of Coghlan or Coughlan) was baptised in Castlelyons Church on 9th March 1818. His father was Patrick Cocklin and his mother was Honora Neil. The sponsors at his Christening were John Morony and Ellen Morony.

Maurice's siblings were Mary (Baptised 16th June 1808), Patrick, Baptised 15th May 1809), Honora (Baptised 18th Nov 1811) and John (Baptised 25th Dec 1814).

I hope that is some help,

I'd like to correspond with a church member who has an interest in county Cork genealogy, is familiar with the Castlelyons region, and could aide me with two surnames, i.e. McDonnell and Barry. I have written before, but with no responses. Perhaps there are these two surnames still in Castlelyons today who are interested in what information I have on their ancestors who left for Massachusetts in the 1840's??

My ancestors: Mary McDonnell, daughter of John McDonnell and Ellen Barry; Catharine McDonnell, single, aunt of Mary McDonnell; and, John McDonnell who may be connected to Tallow's Bossidy large family.

Please email with 'Genealogy' as the subject to jlutz54@hotmail.com

Thank you very much!

Hello. I am working on my husband's (Garnet Maley) family Tree and our journey ends in Castlelyons. Patrick Mealey was born in Castlelyons in 1791 and he was Catholic. There is a birth record, but no mention of parents names. It seems he lived in the area until 1834/1824 when he migrated to Canada with the Peter Robinson group. I would appreciate any help in finding his parents names. I am hoping that there might be a Baptism record with such information. Thank you, Diane Selby Maley

My wife's great grandmother, Elizabeth Ahern was born in Castlelyons about 1847. She married John Joseph Neville in Castlelyons on 15 February 1874.

Does anyone have any information on the Aherns or the Nevilles before their emigration to Australia in 1881.

Any assistance at all will be greatly appreciated.

Our family will be visiting Castlelyons May/June 2017. My ancester was born in Castlelyons but we are having a hard time finding when he came to the USA. It is possible the spelling changed during the transit. His name was Maurice (Morris) Coughlin or Coughlan and was born 1825. It's possible that his father was Patrick born approximately 1800. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. darakevin@tds.net

I am seeking information of any sort about Thomas Griffin who was baptized July 1842 at Castlelyons. His parents names were Thomas Griffin and Joha[?] Denny. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1863 and fought in the American Civil War in 1864-65. He apparently contacted an eye disease during the war and was blinded to some extent. In 1875 , He married Lucy Belson , born 1836 at Killonan, Limerick . She and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1858 via Montreal, Canada. They selltled in an Irish community at Erin , Washington Co. , Wisconsin. They had one daughter, Mary Jane. She is the grandmother of Kathy Abruzzo, a friend of ours. I am helping Kathy with her genealogy, as she plans to come to the Castlelyons area this summer. She has the hopes of visiting where her grandparents originated in Ireland.

If there are descendants in the area or genealogists with information, please contact us. Also, information about the area would be helpful. My email address is higgs@jcwifi.com'

Thank you!
