History:

Castlelyons Community Council, initially known as Muintir na Tire was founded on April 3rd 1962. Dr. Seán O’ Flynn and Mr. Liam Foley organisers with Muintir na Tire along with Mr. Cashman & Mr Power of the Conna branch addressed the meeting of approx 17 persons, with a view to forming a branch in Castlelyons.

The following committee were elected:
President Fr. Seamus Corkery C.C.
Vice President Fr. J. Terry C.C.
Chairman Tom O’ Donnell
V. Chairman John Fouhy
Treasurer Ned Smith
Hon. Sec. Cecil Roddy
Asst. Sec. Tom Barry
P.R.O. Joe Spillane.
In June of that year Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald was welcomed as P.P. of Castlelyons. They also thanked Fr. Terry for his great work and wished him well with his appointment as Dean of St. Colmans College.

A fund raising bazaar was held in November of that year and £130 was realised. Their first purchase was twelve dozen lombardy Poplar trees at 36 shillings a dozen. These were planted from Stables Cross to the creamery.

In 1964 Fr. Corkery was transferred to Mallow and a presentation was made to him. He was replaced by Fr. Andrew Wilson, at that time also Douglas Burgoyne took over as Hon. Sec.  In 1975 the first election for a Community Council took place. The first Chairman was Douglas Burgoyne, joint treasurers John O’ Brien & Ann Hegarty, Treasurer Sheila Cantillon. This Community Council hosted 17 ‘Cork Makes It’ exhibitions.

Douglas Burgoyne & Jim Fleming were responsible for the founding of the Pitch & Putt Club, which is still going strong today. We annually enter the Tidy Towns Competition. The picnic park in the village was made possible through Anco (now Fas) in 1981. The new cemetery was opened in 1983. A heritage scheme took place on the cemetery, recording all headstones & its history.
