About Our Club:
The existing Senior Citizens Committee was formed in 1984, with the aim of continuing holding an annual Christmas Party for our the senior citizens of our parish. Prior to this the party was originally hosted by the youth club. They were later assisted by the then ICA Group, these groups worked very well together. For many years the present committee held an annual fundraising bazaar and a children’s party. These are no longer a feature of the group. Initially the Christmas dinners were cooked in the Community Centre, this was a daunting task. Cookers were borrowed from anywhere they could be got, with great help at the start from the late Harry Smyth, Rathcormac. Standing in the present meeting room cooking a dinner for 100 plus people was an education all on its own. The turkeys were cooked at Martins Bakery and carved by Johnny Fouhy. Things have changed alot since those days, for the last number of years the dinners come ready to serve from Kearney Catering. This has made the workload much lighter for a very small committee. The party is a success each year because of the support we receive from the people of Castlelyons and surrounding areas. We would like to thank all our supporters and sponsors for their help through out the years. In Christmas 2010 the weather was extremly harsh and as a result our party had to be cancelled. It was held early in the New Year (2011). The feedback from this party was extremely positive from all who attended and as a result a decision was made to change the party to a New Year Party for the foreseeable future. So see you all in the New Year 2012 for our next one!
